I just read in German Wikipedia while researching some historical stuff this:

Die antiken Autoren sind sich einig, dass sich die Germanen h�ufig dem Alkoholgenuss hingaben. Die verbreitetsten Getr�nke waren Met und Bier. Hohe Festtage begingen die Germanen h�ufig mit einem Gelage. Selbst die G�tter, so glaubten sie, w�rden sich dem Alkoholgenuss hingeben. So bemerkt schon Tacitus in seiner Germania:

Als Getr�nk dient ein Saft aus Gerste oder Weizen, der durch G�rung eine gewisse �hnlichkeit mit Wein erh�lt...
und bezogen auf den hohen Alkoholkonsum:

Wollte man ihnen, ihrer Trunksucht nachgehend, verschaffen, soviel sie wollen, so k�nnte man sie leichter durch ihr Laster als mit Waffen besiegen.

May I translate this for you:

"The antique authors conform in, that the Germans often gave in to consumption of alcohol. The most common beveragees were 'Met' & 'Beer'. on high feasts the Germans often started with a carousal. Even the Gods - they belieft - would give in to wild consumption of alcohol. This once Tacitus remarked in his 'Germania'.

As beverage they use a juice made out of barley or wheat, which gets by fermentations a similarity to wine..

.. and in relation to the maximum consumption of alcohol:

If you would - relating to their alcohol adiction, support them with as much alcohol as they wanted, it would be much easier to conquer them by their vice, than with weapons"

Probably this weakness still exists here - remember 'Octoberfest in Munich' - so this made think, that when once the British, American, French & Russian allies conquered Hitler's Reich, they maybe would have won much earlier & easier if they would have thrown millions of tons of beer barrels over Germany instead of bombs. - Just to mention..
